“IT DOESN’T MATTER, I CAN SEE MY CAR NOW”
OK guys, here is what happened last week hiking and it is in the last few sentences of the story below, but read it from top to bottom.
ON 02/01 – Our first prep hike for Target Santiago Peak
=======
Two weeks ago, we started hiking with many of us lagging behind and we had many issues or fatigue and capacity. We were un-prepared with many showing up in Jeans, few water bottles and regular shoes. Krishna having started small cramps in the leg at the start of Big Bend itself. Then, many of us remember, we still took a decision to decent on Laguna Ridge (toughest one mile in OC with 75% elevation and a lot of rocks and boulders), and then Krishan has second and third cramps on the trail and he couldn’t walk to the car. We all saw what happened then, we all got the really check, many of us saying that we are not ready for Santiago Peak. JUST TWO WEEKS AGO
Now Two weeks later:
=================
Evening Before: 02/07/2015
We setup the stage for double digits miles long hike but the week end stated with not sure who will make it or we might cancel the hike. Morning started with Krishan having late night party in Corona for a friend 25th anniversary and went to bed at 1.30 AM. I too were late night completing many pending items.
Morning at 5.30 AM – my alarms buzz, I got up checking who is coming or who not and it is silence. Again we almost canceled the hike, but we went for it anyway. Here is conversation between Krishna and me
[2/8, 5:56 AM] Rajiv Singh: Krishan r we canceling today hike?
[2/8, 5:59 AM] Rajiv Singh: Shiva is not online, manny is out roday, lets cancel.today hike
[2/8, 6:02 AM] Krishan Sammi: No, why to cancel
[2/8, 6:02 AM] Krishan Sammi: We will go
[2/8, 6:02 AM] Rajiv Singh: Ok then
[2/8, 6:03 AM] Rajiv Singh: Leest go, but just me and you
[2/8, 6:03 AM] Krishan Sammi: If no one is there we can try 12 miles because then there is nothing to hurry
[2/8, 6:04 AM] Rajiv Singh: That is right, so will meet u there, i thouvht u were sleeping
[2/8, 6:05 AM] Krishan Sammi: Shiva is coming too
I drove and then carpooled with Shiva and we reached their late and started hike at 7.00 AM with a target of 12 miles – tough goal. Reached to the fork of Big Bent and Laguna Ridge and took a decision to head on Big Bend (Goal was to get easy 12 miles, so we avoided Laguna Ridge) after Krishan Says, “We will come back and conquer Laguna ridge one day”
Fork towads NIX nature center after 7 miles – we thought is is flat 2.5 miles each way, so lets add 5 miles to make 12 miles and head back home. Turned out to be difficult 5 miles with many peaks similar to Big Bend. Shiva has to return for prior commitment, so he drove my car back to Irvine.
We reached NIX, took a 30 minutes rest and after talking to staff there found that there is a natual lake (only one in OC) in a one mile. We had seen many natural lakes in India during rainy season, so lets see one more here. We decided, lets go the lake and then we had back to car, well it was difficult 2 miles and by the time we came back to NIX parking, we were already tired. Time was running out as I had to be at home at 1.30 PM to drop my daughter to her first Volleyball torunament starting at 2.00.
So, started hiking back to car, just like we are being chased by a bear, thinking it is 3.00 miles more to go – turned out the be 5 miles on a new trail with many peaks and valley, tired exhausted, hungry – but we had enough water and fruits/trail-mixes though. And the last banana we shared never tested so sweet before. We headed-back to car completing 14 miles but wait, Krishan still had to drop me to my home in Irvine before heading back to RSM. I reached home just 10 minutes late and got in my car, I drove daughter to Volleyball tournament, her team came second. And both myself and Krishan had a personal record of 14 MILES HIKE, tired but very happy ending
But wait, did I tell you what happened on last 14th miles ...
So we are just half mile away from parking lot climbing on the last small peak and guess what happened, Krishan has another cramp on his leg, OMG. And then Krishan says,
“DON’T WORRY, I CAN HANDLE IT THIS TIME”
and then he says,
“IT DOESN’T MATTER, I CAN SEE MY CAR NOW”
So join us and support us.
We will make it to Santiago Peak, Please do you part and donate for this great cause.
Thank you,
Rajiv Singh
